An Open Letter To President Bush On The Bible Says...
« on: December 14, 2004, 06:09:15 pm »
Someone sent this to me. Flame away.

Quote
Dear President Bush,

Congratulations on your election victory and for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from you and understand why you would propose and support a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. As you said "...in the eyes of God marriage is based between a man a woman." I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of
debate.
However, I do need some advice from you regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how best to follow them.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in
Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness - Lev.15:19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9.

The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev.11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev.21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Could be, but I think if we realize that it was not really sent to anyone (though I suppose someone could have), it's just as funny.

I will try to work "pleasing odor for the lord" into my vocabulary.

Here's the snopes article on its origin as a letter to dr laura and its reappearance skewering bush in fall 2004:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.asp

I think we can all agree that no one is arguing that it was actually sent, or anything, but just for the record. :-P

This is offensive trash...Try reading some of those verses that are quoted and see if you really think they mean what this letter states they mean... Im seriously controlling myself from saying what I really think about a person who would be so loutish as to post something like this. This post to me is on the same level of making a list of racial slurs that indicate the perceived shortcomings of a particular ethnic group. I wonder how well received a post like that would be here...

And wtf does this have shit do with President Bush?!?! You guys need to let go...

I could be wrong but I think this has to do with President Bush because he wears his faith on his sleeve, has often says that he uses his faith to make decisions, and won the election because he rallied the evangelicals....

...i don't think it's the same thing at all.  i don't think it's making fun of all christians.  it's pointing out the selective applications of biblical language by people who claim to take each word of the bible as verbatim truth...if you choose to believe that the bible is Truth, who is anyone to say that violating one verse will send you to hell, but violating another verse just means times have changed?  not NEARLY all christians are fundamentalists, or even claim to be, but i find it difficult to take selective fundamentalism (choosing verses and provisions to follow or not follow), disguised as complete fundamentalism, seriously.

as for how it applies to bush, i agree with MissDaisy.

But does Bush believe the Bible as literal truth? (I honestly don't know.)

I don't think so.  He's a Methodist, which is hardly a group known for being religious fundamentalists.  That doesn't mean he's not, but it does lend some doubt.

In any event, when I have some time to sit down with a Bible and go through a Bible-only, protestant-style argument (so, after finals), I'll respond with more detail.
Previously, the cup was being filled. Now it is overflowing.

i do not think he has said one way or the other publicly, so i honestly don't know about bush, personally, either.

i should have been clearer, in writing that paragraph i was thinking more along the lines of admittedly fundamentalist groups who support him.

Right, because he like millions of other Americans believes in God we should direct this assault at him...Great logic.

Again I point out the hypocrisy...Call someone a racial epithet, and the only thing that matters is if they take offense. The sender's intent is irrelevant. Assault religion, wellllll, thats a different story. Religion is fair game so long as the intent was not to defile and offend....Who cares if some religious people are offended by it, bunch of whiny babies need to get over themselves.

A racial slur!? You have got be f*cking kidding me. Don't sugar coat it, let's hear what you really think. I didn't write the damn thing. It's meant to be humourous, and unless you find the Bible infallible, you have no reason to find it offensive. And I accept your challenge, all from the New International Version:

Leviticus 24:44 "'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves."

Exodus 21:7 "If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do"

Leviticus 15:19-24 "19 " 'When a woman has her regular flow of blood, the impurity of her monthly period will last seven days, and anyone who touches her will be unclean till evening.

20 " 'Anything she lies on during her period will be unclean, and anything she sits on will be unclean. 21 Whoever touches her bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 22 Whoever touches anything she sits on must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. 23 Whether it is the bed or anything she was sitting on, when anyone touches it, he will be unclean till evening.

24 " 'If a man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean
"

Levitiucs 1:9 "He is to wash the inner parts and the legs with water, and the priest is to burn all of it on the altar. It is a burnt offering, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the LORD ."

Exodus 35:2 "For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD . Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. "

Leviticus 11:10 "But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales-whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water-you are to detest. "

Leviticus 21:17-21 ""Say to Aaron: 'For the generations to come none of your descendants who has a defect may come near to offer the food of his God. 18 No man who has any defect may come near: no man who is blind or lame, disfigured or deformed; 19 no man with a crippled foot or hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked or dwarfed, or who has any eye defect, or who has festering or running sores or damaged testicles. 21 No descendant of Aaron the priest who has any defect is to come near to present the offerings made to the LORD by fire. He has a defect; he must not come near to offer the food of his God."

Leviticus 19:27 "'Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard."

Leviticus 11:6-8 "The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a split hoof; it is unclean for you. 7 And the pig, though it has a split hoof completely divided, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8 You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you"

Leviticus 19:19 "'Keep my decrees.

" 'Do not mate different kinds of animals.

" 'Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.

" 'Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
"

Leviticus 24:10-16 is taken out of context, sort of. The stoning is performed after someone is blasphemous with the Lord's name, and does not fit with the rest of number 10.

Csokn...

Being as nice and cordial as I can possibly try to be...I think you are a complete bumbling idiot. Your obnoxious and arrogant posts on p.com from the past pale in comparison to this, well I wont even say what I think it is. You enjoy spitting in peoples faces, and it will come back to you, this I promise. How ignorant and foolish you are googling the verses laid out in that letter, and then pasting them from one version of the bible in a post as some sort of evidence that you have "accepted" my challenge. I wont even comment more on that it is so preposterous.

And then you basically say how dare I get offended...how dare you sir.

I have been biting my tongue for quite some time with your posts...But my anger over this one has gotten the better of me... God help you if you ever hit 412 Miami this year...
