Toughest Regionals
« on: February 07, 2008, 12:48:18 pm »
So what does everyone think the toughest regionals are?  Obviously DC and Boston will be tough with the national champs/runner ups, but there are some other toughies out there. (i.e. Baltimore and Jamaica)

Greenville!!!! I personally feel that Greenville is the hardest regional in the nation... It is always a bloodbath in the southeast.

This is such a sticky debate, as, in the end, everyone always thinks that their regional is the toughest, because everyone else doesn't understand the tough rivalries attendant at their regionals, and how hard it is to get out.

Technically speaking, the toughest regionals would be those with the most bids, because, bid level is equated to field strength, so, the tougher the field, the more bids.

However, a bid poor regional would argue that their regional is, in fact, harder, because it has only 4 or 5 total bids, compared to a regional with 7 or 8.

I don't know what the best measure is, other than to say that all of AMTA keeps getting better, stronger, faster, it is pretty tough to get out of anywhere anymore, and, with the advent of super regionals next year, the larger question will be "who has the toughest super regional" rather than who has the toughest prelim.

Sorry, I'm behind - super-regionals?

And I would always take my 7-bid regional over a five-bid one.

I think there are a number of different subsets of "toughest regional" such as toughest to get a gold bid out of, toughest to get a silver bid out of, deepest regional.

For instance, I would say both Greenvilles are the deepest regions. Almost all the teams at the region have competed in multiple invitationals and are good enough to give you a fight in any round. However, I would also put both Greenvilles at the very bottom of the list for toughest to get a silver bid out of because of the high number of bids in the region coupled with the high number of bid ineligible teams the region has.
It's all about the U.

I'm so biased, I don't think I could give an accurate posting.  I definitly think my regional is the toughest, but without ever having competed at another, my position is certainly very skewed.  I think that must be the case for others as well.  Regardless, there are extrememely competitive teams in almost every regional tournament.

How about the reserve?

Are there any regionals out there that appear weak (or weaker than others to be politically correct)?
