The "Great Sonoran Showdown" Mock Trial Invitational
« on: April 23, 2008, 03:17:49 pm »
I wanted to take this opportunity to announce an invitational this fall. On the weekend of November 8th and 9th, the University of Arizona will be hosting the "Great Sonoran Showdown" Invitational in Tucson, Arizona.  All four rounds will be held at the Pima County Superior Courthouse.

There are currently plenty of spots open for registration. If your team or any team you know may be interested feel free to pm or email me at wlodarco AT email DOT arizona DOT edu.  Also contact me if you have any other questions regarding potential participation at this invitational.

More info to come.

Corey I actually had a question for you, but I'm sure other people are interested, so I'll just post it here.

I recently became aware that there two competing mock trial programs at Arizona, one called the Law Cats or something? and then there's the original University of Arizona Mock Trial Association.

Can you further explain the situation? How does that work?

MT4e, to be honest, I'm not the best one to answer that question. It's a long complicated story of which I've completely isolated myself from :)

I promise more details about the tournament will be included as soon as I can give them.

I’ll  field this question, Corey can focus on the tournament.  :-)

My name is Brian, and I am the President of Mock Trial @ the University of Arizona – at least I am for the next week until we have elections and I graduate.

There were two competing organizations on our campus this past year – us and the Law Cats. The Law Cats club was started this past season after some internal conflicts in our program.

Our club was registered with AMTA by our staff advisor, who has been the advisor of our program for its entire existence.
The campus administration was alerted to the two competing clubs on campus and is considering some policy changes for next year. I have met with them several times to discuss solutions, but as of now there will continue to be two clubs on our campus next year.

I hope that clears up your question. If not, please let me know

Let's be honest, is anyone here fluent in Polish? If they aren't, I doubt they'd know how to pronounce my name :).

That's awesome! I can only speak a little, I've been in the process of learning for awhile. Funny thing is, I'm fluent in Italian, and the only Italian I ever have in me is the pizza I get from the Italian restaurant down the street.

I'm hoping so...I'm also hoping my French will help me.  I finish my French major this semester (one class period, one test, and one final to go!) yet still have a year to go, so I decided I'd give Italian a try

Is there a calculus or a standardized criteria for invitations? Or is there a fair amount of subjectivity?

That's actually how I picked the teams I invited before I announced it on perjuries :)

But I think people are just afraid to talk to me. Cuz of the screen name and all. I really gotta change my default screen name that I use for basically every website. Probably should go back to Bigfatpolack.... only problem is I'm not fat anymore... Such a cruel world.

In a few weeks I'll get an invite page up on our website (www.arizonamocktrial.org). Then we point people there and they will see your email address instead of SN. Maybe that will be a little more inviting. :-)

Our website, www.arizonamocktrial.org, is out of date with the tournament information.

The school changed the password to the account on me and I've been trying to get them to fix the problem.
I'm hoping to get a working password from them on Monday and I will update all the tournament information at that time.

Until then - please contact Corey (RaneofDeath) with any questions dealing with the tournament.

Due to an unfortunate last minute drop out, we currently have ONE open spot for this weekend at the Great Sonoran Showdown. If anyone at all is interested, I will charge no registration fee for your team, and will give this position to the first team that wishes to reserve the last remaining spot in the tournament. Please let me know if you have any questions, and feel free to email me (wlodarco AT email DOT Arizona DOT edu).

I just wanted to say thank you to EVERYONE that came and competed. I had a great time meeting everyone that I have been talking to for the past few months, and I hope that everyone had a good time while they were here with us.

A HUGE thanks to Ryan  and Laura Seelau for all of their help, and to Ryan who ran our tab room along with our coach Casey McGinley.

Big thanks to Jimmy Cool and Sarah Cool for being great friends and helping me with the last minute stages of putting this tournament together.

Another big thanks to Brian Chase that helped me along with all of the tournament preparations and ideas from the start. This would not have happened without his help and advice throughout the entire process.

Of course, to my program's coach and mentor staff: Larry Ward, Micah Schmit, Joel Patterson, Brian Chase, Chris Dang, Mike Harnden, Lindsay Schafer, and Ben Griem. Without their constant volunteering to judge and help with logistics, the tournament would not have been able to run on time as it did.

Another huge thank you to Breane Bushu, despite not ever participating in Mock Trial, offered to volunteer her time to sit in tab room to be present for any Tab Room intervention problems.

Also a big thanks to UCSD, ASU, and USC for 4 great, competitive rounds. I had a great time this weekend and I am so happy that all of you came out to compete. I hope that I will run into all of you throughout this season's competition.
