Is this a product of the new pairing system?  I can't remember ever seeing five teams at 7 wins before.  Strange.

It is partially the product I suppose. Look at the 4th round opponents for all of the 7-1 teams. It could also just be a competitive regional (I'm afraid I don't know very much about this region to say that, though with Harvard, Yale's A team, and the defending national runner ups, it seems like a competitive regional).

Both harvard teams saw 3-3 teams going into 4th round, as did GW. Yale saw a 2-3-1 team. Wellesley actually saw a 4-2 team going into the last round.

Yes, it almost certainly is.  Because all of those 7 win teams saw lower win total teams in Round 4.  Unlike in previous years where all of those 7 win teams would have hit each other and knocked each other down and we would have ended up with one or maybe two 7 win teams.

I think it's both.  Though somebody's probably going to get mad at me for saying this, there's a big split between the top and bottom halves of this regional.  Teams that got to the 4th round 6-0 or 5-1 had the advantage of falling against particularly weak opponents due to the new paring system instead of hitting each other and risking splits.

In short, yes the new paring system was responsible, but the effect was enhanced, or, if your prefer, the problem exacerbated, by the high and low ends of the field.

for the record, no one hit the fourth round at 6-0, though there were a bunch of 5-1 teams after three rounds.
