Biggest Surprises at Des Moines

Who saw Penn coming?? Fifth overall? I picked them fifth in the city of Philadelphia (behind Temple, St. Joseph's, Drexel, and the Culinary Institute of Southwest Philadelphia...).

Pete Sampras takes offense with your signature.

Oh, and I didn't see two UVa teams, much less one, finishing barely within 2 ballots of .500.

Northwood winning the championship was a surprise to me, though them doing well certainly wasn't.

How 'bout NYU's Bryant not getting an All-American Award? I thought the kid had a legit shot at becoming a four-timer...

There may not be a more presentationally gifted attorney than Co'Relous.  But it's not the well-rounded game of say, an Amanda Bonn.  Nonetheless, I am also surprised Co'Relous did not get an AA

Are you suggesting he will use all 5 years of eligibility? Or was he redshirted?

Well technically you can win 3 all-Americans each year at golds. One on each side of the case and then you win one by being in the Final round.

He was also a double AA last year. So he only needs two more. For someone who wins awards at his rate, that shouldn't really be a big deal.

Mr. Bryant's in 2008-09 season summary

Downtown Invitational - 19 ranks  [P]
UC-I Beach Party Invitational - 19 ranks [P], 36 ranks combined
Steel City Invitational - 18 ranks [P]
UCLA Invitational - 20 ranks [P]
Demon Deacon Invitational - 18 ranks [D]
NCAA Atlantic Regional - 19 ranks [D]
Hamilton ORCS - 17 ranks [D], 17 ranks [P]

I believe only the Finals and the Big Red Invitational were without recognition.

The amazing thing about Jonathon Hartsfield who will be a senior next year is that he was a double sided All American last year and this year, plus winning the championship round this year.

How much more does this guy have left to prove??

I have never had the chance to compete against Hartsfield. I really hope i get that opportunity next year.

The biggest surprises for me were UVA not doing well and BU. Not so much going 4-4, I thought they were capable of that. But they split with both UCLA A and Miami A. Impressive performance.

Actually it was Miami B, who placed 8th, which is even more impressive.  BU, because they don't compete in many tournaments, tends to be one of the most underrated schools in AMTA.  Just look at their nationals performance for the past two years.

No it was Miami A. Miami has been confusing all year because they have used their higher number for their A team.

I am so so proud of the BU program and how they have evolved. A lot of the current seniors were freshman when I was involved with the team last and I am just so happy to see how they have become great leaders for the program. And they are just a nice bunch of people too--keep it up Terriers :) 4-4 in that division is nothing to sneeze at.

Miami A and B have been interchangeable all year....the B team was originally the one with Gus Lazares and the A team had Matt Ciccone....then the A team had some personnel changes over winter break and  they really flipped as the "A" and "B" teams...so the 8th place team at national that split with UCLA A and Furman A was the Lazares team and ultimately the "A" team...BTW that Miami squad loses no one to graduation and comes back intact next year with Lazares, Jeffcott, and Harrison as the attorney bank
