    Alumni coaching

This year several of the recent Miami graduates are going on to different schools intending to coach mock trial. Next year Miami will have at least one alumni coaching at each of the following:

    University of Minnesota (me)
    Vanderbilt (Drew Dorner)
    Case Western (Scotty Lippert)
    Duke (Alex Bluebond)
and of course Miami (assorted alumni)

I believe a few of the other alumni are considering coaching other schools but they haven't committed yet.

So here is my question: Is this normal? Of course most mock coaches at this point are an alumni of somewhere, but how many schools have produced this number of coaches. Moreover, I know there is a lot of alumni coaching at the schools they competed at but how many move on to other places?

    Re: Alumni coaching

Semi-rare, but I know of a few others. I know USC alums are coaching at Cornell, (formerly) NYU, (ironically) UCLA, USD law, Southwestern Law, and, of course, USC. I believe there are some that occasionally pop in from their law schools to help out, but I believe that's it for our official coaching alums. For some reason (as in, I have no confirmation of this), I believe UCLA and Stanford also have quite a few alums in the coaching world.

    Re: Alumni coaching

It would make me very proud if some of our alumni at Arizona State went on to coach but, as of yet, none have pursued that path. However, our students do coach a high school program.

At ASU, we have four coaches. My wife and I are University of Arizona MT alumni. Chaz Ball is a Maryland MT alum. This year we will be joined by Gaya Shanmuganatha, a UC-Irvine alum.

Amanda Bonn and Gautam Sood, UCLA Alumni, have both helped out at UC-Irvine and Bonn used to help Stanford. Rachel Juarez of Yale MT is presently Stanford's coach. Justin Bernstein was a Cal MT alum. Vikram Kumar coaches his alma mater nowadays at NYU along with help from Andrew Baker and Justin Mattaresee. Anatoly Rosental of Cornell MT also helps NYU. Abbe Stensland of Central in Iowa is back coaching her alma mater.

Abbe attended Central, but is coaching Cornell unless something drastic happened since May that I am unaware of...

Iowa has quite a few of our own get their hands on different programs...

    Andrew Thomas: Yale
Joshua Jones: Northwestern and UC-SD (co-coaching with an Iowa law grad/coach and UCLA alum David Lichtenstein)
    Ryan and Laura Seelau: ASU
    Beau Brindley: Chicago
Chris Patton: helped Kris Lyons (former Iowa coach/Loras alum) at Cornell
    Aaron Ries: helped at Kansas
Megan Lowe and Patrick Ralph: taking over at Iowa this fall

    I may be missing some...
Of course multiple alumns have helped coach Iowa. Some unlisted members have coached at the high school level.
My rants and ramblings are my own and should not be attached to others.

    Re: Alumni coaching

I'm an alum and coach and W&M. I didn't go to undergrad there, but that's where I ended up for law school. We have 3 coaches, all 3 are law students and all 3 are AMTA alums from different undergrad schools.

    Re: Alumni coaching

I'm coaching at SLU. One of my former teammates is about to start at MU Law and will likely help coach their undergraduate team (much to my chagrin).

    Re: Alumni coaching

Are any AMTA alums coming to a Miami law school? If you are going to FIU Law, Nova Southeastern Law, St Thomas Law or UMiami law- or coming to Miami for any reason really- and want to coach, contact me!
    It's all about the U.
